The origin of the Devon Rex dates back to the 1950s, when a unique cat breed was born in Devon, England. The owner of this kitten also had a stray cat who was the mother of the newborn kitten. The father was a stray cat with a curly coat. The owner named the kitten Karlee because of their curly coat and reached out to the conservation program to plea that they should preserve this new breed.

Soon after, the preservation program started working on preserving this new breed which was later known as the Devon Rex, derived from the town’s name. The breed was introduced in the United States in the late 1960s. Today, it is one of the popular breeds and demanded domestic cat breeds over the world.

A naturally healthy breed, the Devon Rex, can have certain health-related issues like other cat breeds. Not all the Devons, but some may be prone to certain health problems such as heart disease, hereditary baldness, Malassezia dermatitis, a kind of ear infection, and hip dysplasia.
